Hartman Arena, an entertainment center north of Wichita, hosts concerts, sporting events, family shows, and trade shows holding around 5,000 people at any of these events. During design and construction green initiatives were at the forefront. The arena is subterranean (the seating bowl is located underground), which helps keep costs down for heating and cooling.
Dean E. Norris, Inc. was the heating and air conditioning contractor supplying and installing the rooftop air handling units with exterior outside ductwork. All the interior ductwork, called DuctSox, is exposed to add an architectural element to the space. DuctSox is an inflatable, flexible ductwork that allows less structural requirements than traditional ductwork. With traditional ductwork, registers would have been needed but the DuraTex fabric has factory-engineered permeability to distribute up to 15 percent of the airflow through the material.
